Interior base width and loaded weight decide how a tote carries. Three totes benchmarked, with the measuring method and the standard kit stated.

Interior base width is the measurement that decides whether a tote carries a laptop flat, and almost no brand publishes it. Exterior width is printed everywhere; the number inside, at the base, usually is not. That gap is worth closing before you buy, because it is the difference between a bag that stands up under load and one that folds into a triangle.
Measure the base, not the rim
Put the tape inside the bag, on the base, and read from seam to seam. Not across the rim: totes taper, and a bag that is 52 cm wide at the opening may be 44 cm at the base. Measure height from the base seam to the top of the opening for the same reason. A sagging base effectively shortens the bag, so a 31 cm listed height can behave like 27 cm of usable depth once the floor bows.

Loaded weight is the number your shoulder feels
Empty weight is a poor proxy. That 3.3 lb is a stated assumption, not a measurement.

The empty-weight figure shoppers compare most closely moves the total by under 2 percent. To get your own number, weigh the bag empty on a kitchen scale, weigh the contents together, and add. Brands publish empty weight because it is easy to obtain; your shoulder only ever meets the sum.

Press two fingers into the centre of the base from inside. A reinforced base resists and returns; an unreinforced one dimples.
